Objectives

Studies on management and utilization of forest residues, which gave rise to the line of research "Forest Residues", started in 1989 from a partnership between the ESALQ / USP and Paper Industry Simon current Votorantim Celulose e Papel - Unit Piracicaba. a study for manufacturing an insulating thermo-acoustic cementitious composite for use in construction was initially developed. From 1994 to 1999 it was conducted the new study, this time aimed at the incorporation of the WWTP sludge in ceramic materials (blocks and bricks).

The results were very positive, leading to the recovery of 100% of the solid waste generated by the enterprise, reducing the need for disposal in landfills. This project has become a reference in the area and from it several other similar studies have been conducted to the application of similar solutions in other companies.

In 1995 it was approved by FAPESP theme project "Integrated and Sustainable Management of Caixeta Forests," which included the sub-project "Characterization and Harvest Waste Management and Processing Caixeta" which led to studies for the development of management systems waste in the forestry industry. From this project started, too, the research and extension activities on caiçara crafts in the Atlantic Forest and on the use of waste in craft production, which resulted in the project "Artisans of the Atlantic Forest". In 2000, through a project on integrated development of sisal agricultural industry, in partnership with the FUNDACENTRO, it was built Movelaria Laboratory and Forestry Waste. In 2003 the Forest Waste Utilization course was created for the Program of Graduate Studies in Forest Resources. The Movelaria line is being structured.

Activities

In 2004 it was created the LCF discipline - 628 Movelaria and began the first research projects. The first results are available in the form of products, furniture and small wooden objects, developed during the course and the study group in furniture making.
